The three-time Cy Young winner and Detroit Tigers pitcher announced he will retire after the 2026 season.
Verlander made the announcement on social media Wednesday, shortly after the league announced he had been named to the MLB All-Star roster as a legend.
“While I am fully prepared to give my team everything I have for the remainder of this season, I have decided that this will be my last season,” he wrote. “It’s likely that I’ll end up where it all started, with the Detroit Tigers.”
Verlander has been on the injured list since April and has appeared in just one game for the Tigers this season.
He will not participate in the All-Star Game itself, but is expected to be present and celebrated during the week’s events.
It’s the 10th star award for the 43-year-old, whose storied career includes three Cy Young Awards and the 2011 American League Most Valuable Player honor.
