A doctor at Toronto’s prestigious Hospital for Sick Children has been charged following an investigation by Toronto police into online child exploitation.
The Toronto Police Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit began an investigation in January 2026 after an electronic device was allegedly used to access and download child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
“In February 2026, ICE unit members executed search warrants at a children’s hospital and a private home,” police said in a statement.
“Several electronic devices were seized, including a work computer.”
On Tuesday, July 21, police arrested Dr. Dylan Dissanayake, 44, of Toronto.
Police confirm that he works as a doctor at the hospital, but add that at this time, “investigators have not found any evidence that the sexual abuse and child exploitation material is linked to his medical practice.”
He is charged with possessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material and accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
SickKids Hospital ‘deeply upset’ by allegations
SickKids Hospital released a statement Tuesday about the allegations, saying it was “deeply upset and disturbed” and condemned the suspect’s alleged behavior.
“We understand this news is concerning and the safety and well-being of our patients, families and staff remains our top priority,” the statement said.
“SickKids was not advised of any risk to patients and their families, and the Toronto Police Service indicated there was no evidence that the allegations were related to Dr. Dissanayake’s medical practice.”
SickKids adds that Dr Dissanayake was immediately placed on leave as soon as the investigation became known.
