“She was a kind person”: Son kills mother with knife on Berlin balcony

A 43-year-old man reportedly killed his 65-year-old mother with a knife in an apartment on Mariendorfer Damm in Tempelhof-Schöneberg on Tuesday morning. According to police, witnesses alerted authorities in Mariendorf around 10:25 a.m. Witnesses had earlier seen a man stabbing a woman several times on the balcony.

Emergency services initially made contact with the suspect in the street. They then arrested a 43-year-old man at the apartment. Rescuers began to resuscitate the woman. She died from her injuries in hospital shortly afterwards. The suspect was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said. An arrest warrant is pending.

Thus, the victim and suspect are Germans. The 43-year-old had lived in his mother’s small apartment for more than a year, a Berlin police spokesman said early in the evening. Numerous eyewitness videos were also viewed throughout the day. Many pastoral measures were needed for emergency services and witnesses, the spokesperson said.

“At first we heard a loud scream,” says Tatyana Ivashchenko, who works on the first floor of the house. “I left the office. Other people also stopped and looked up,” the 45-year-old said. At first nothing was visible. “Then I saw her climb up onto the balcony railing. It was an elderly woman with gray hair.” Then a bearded man came out of the door onto the balcony and knocked her to the ground.

An employee of a dental practice on the ground floor of the building watched from the window. “Suddenly we heard a lot of screaming and thought it was children chasing each other,” the man said. As cries for help rang out, he noticed passersby looking at the third-floor balcony. Then the police arrived at the scene very quickly. After the hustle and bustle, he and his colleagues had only “relatively shaky” work to do.

“She was a kind person,” says a local resident, describing the victim. “She was always friendly, always nice, always positive.” She lovingly cared for her grandchildren, who were with her every weekend.

Another resident reports seeing her son standing on the balcony after the crime. He waved his arms, pulled his cap over his head and raised his bloody hands.

“She was a very funny, sweet woman,” says another neighbor. The victim helped her around the house some time ago when she could no longer cope alone due to health reasons. “She came to see me once a week for two hours,” says the neighbor. It grew into friendship.
