New Delhi: The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), the nodal drug agency responsible for regulating drug prices in India, has fixed the retail prices of 39 drugs, including Boehringer Ingelheim’s blood clot buster tenecteplase.
The list includes several diabetes medications, antiretrovirals, antibiotics, and pain and cardiovascular medications.
As per the latest price notification released by the authority, the retail price of tenecteplase 50 mg vial (TNK-tPA) is fixed at Rs 60,238.
The drug is used to treat acute myocardial infarction, commonly called a heart attack, and acute ischemic stroke by dissolving harmful blood clots.
Domestic firms such as Reliance Life Sciences, Cadila and others are also selling generic alternative therapies at prices lower than the pioneering brands.
Prices of SGLT-2 inhibitor combinations containing sitagliptin and metformin are capped at Rs 11-15, while antibiotic formulations from Alkem and Mankind are placed in the price range of Rs 19-25.
Price fixing is a routine procedure undertaken by the NPPA to regulate and monitor drug prices. For non-routine drugs, companies are allowed to increase prices annually by no more than 10 percent, while for routine drugs (drugs included in the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM)) only inflation-related adjustments are allowed.
According to the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP), the maximum prices and retail prices of a drug are fixed by adding a 16 percent margin to the average retailer price (PTR) of all brands of that drug that have a market share of 1 percent or more of that drug in the market database.
