Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi is in Muscat to discuss the future of Hormuz
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Muscat, the capital of Oman, at the head of a diplomatic delegation to discuss the future of the Strait of Hormuz. This was reported by the official Iranian news agency IRNA.
According to Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai, the visit represents “a continuation of consultations initiated with Oman in the last two months on the Strait of Hormuz,” one of the “key points of the memorandum of understanding to end the war.”
Baghai said Iran has “clearly accepted responsibility for defining conventional agreements and guaranteeing maritime services related to naval traffic in the Strait of Hormuz,” assuring that Tehran is “very determined” to honor its obligations.
According to the memorandum, Iran must coordinate its actions and cooperate with Oman to manage the strait. At the moment, the representative added, several rounds of technical negotiations have already taken place in both Tehran and Muscat.
The visit came after Iran’s permanent representative to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani, asked the United Nations to stop US attacks, threatening non-compliance with the June agreement if Washington did not stop military operations.
Iran and Oman are negotiating a security protocol to govern shipping in the strait following restrictions imposed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Three weeks ago, Muscat also introduced a temporary free sea corridor to facilitate transit through the strategic waterway, which carried about a fifth of the world’s oil before the war.
