Mexico vs England | The start of the match has been delayed, why?

Mexico’s World Cup round of 16 match was postponed due to adverse weather conditions in Mexico City on Monday (AEST).

FIFA has confirmed that the knockout match has been postponed, with kick-off now rescheduled for 21:00 local time (11:00 AEST).

“Due to adverse weather conditions in Mexico City, including the risk of lightning in the stadium area, the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match between Mexico and England has been moved to 7:00 pm local time (9:00 pm ET).

“The safety and security of all people is FIFA’s priority. We thank all fans for their understanding and cooperation.”

England and Mexico will go head-to-head with a place in the quarter-finals on the line.

Thomas Tuchel has already spoken of England’s “disadvantage” against Mexico due to altitude, while El Tri claim their first World Cup knockout win in 40 years on the back of a flawless tournament with four wins and four clean sheets.

BBC Sport chief football commentator Phil McNulty said at the Azteca Stadium: “Moments after the delayed kick-off was announced, a very soulful Mexican song started playing and all the fans joined in for a very dramatic rendition.

“As you probably already know, it was “Hasta Que Te Conoci” (En Vivo desde el Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes) by Juan Gabriel.

“That definitely got them to come here. The Mexican fans loved every second of it. It was followed by Oasis’ ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’. The Mexican fans didn’t like it very much.”
