Liberal leader Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has launched a stunning rebuke of Pauline Hanson, saying she was focusing on a “family dynasty” to get her daughter into Parliament.
The North Carolina senator made the observation unprompted Thursday after being asked what she thought about the One Nation party’s rise in the polls.
She was not asked about Senator Hanson’s family or her daughter Lee Hanson, who was campaigning in Tasmania in hopes of seeking a Senate seat.
“Look, I think this is her party,” Senator Price said. Sky News.
“I appreciate the fact that I am a member of the Democratic Party, and we know that it is a democratic process to elect a leader in our party,” she said.
“I believe Pauline’s policy is to pass on the family dynasty, but I believe we have our parts to play in bringing about this terrible Labor government.”
Senator Hanson has made no secret of her hopes that her daughter Lee Hanson will one day join her in Parliament as an elected representative.
“I don’t know how long (her political career) will last, but I’m not going anywhere until I know I’m comfortable passing on my legacy to the next person,” Sen. Hanson said.
Senator Hanson’s daughter Lee ran unsuccessfully as the One Nation Senate candidate representing Tasmania at the last federal election.
But she plans to run again after last launching her campaign in Tasmania in just one month.
“She will be running for Senate in the next election and I am so proud of her,” said Senator Hanson.
“I don’t believe in jobs for boys and either you can cut them or you can’t around me. Because what I’m trying to do, what I’m trying to achieve, you need the right people around you to push it forward.
“And that’s why I think she’ll be a great asset. I wouldn’t want my sons around her, but my daughter, she’s different.”
Senator Price herself comes from a family of political leaders. Her mother, Bess Nungarray Price AM, was a member of the Country Liberal Party in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly for four years.
“Misfits”: Pauline Hanson argues with a reporter
Senator Hanson last month attacked a National Press Club reporter for asking questions about her daughter Lee and saying he didn’t believe in nepotism.
The clash began during a question-and-answer session during her Press Club appearance when she was asked about the fact that her daughter works for a NSW MP despite living in Tasmania, where she is campaigning.
“Senator Hanson Sarah Martin of Guardian. “Taxpayers are paying more than $150,000 a year for your daughter Lee Hanson to apparently campaign full-time in Tasmania while working as a political adviser to a NSW senator,” she was asked.
— Did you take any part in appointing her to this position?
In response, Senator Hanson said the premise of the question was simply wrong.
“Honestly, you never give up. I’ve never seen such a trashy journalist,” she said.
“You have this obsession with constantly trying to destroy me, my party or Mrs. Rinehart, no matter what you do.
“You will be banned. I will answer this question for you today, but I am telling you now: do not come to me for an interview in the future.
“You do poor research, have no information, and will spread lies about me.
“Well, that’s enough for me. But I’ll tell you, no, she didn’t do that, I didn’t give her that job.
“She got the job on merit from someone who actually wanted to hire her, her ability, her HR skills, her ability to work at the University of Tasmania for eight years and lead a department there.
“So my daughter is very capable. She could end up in the Senate with me.”
“If I’m lucky enough to be elected by the people of Queensland, then you’ll have something to write about, won’t you?”
