In her memoir, Rancic wrote that O’Connell broke up with her via intercom, which he confirmed on the podcast.
“I broke up with her over the intercom because Giuliana Rancic came to my apartment and turned on my intercom,” he explained. “I didn’t expect Giuliana Rancic… (She) wanted to come into my apartment. Thank God, the bell, the gate, the security. I paid quite a significant fee to the landlord for these things.”
O’Connell continued: “I said, ‘I didn’t know you were coming.’ You can’t come here. You can’t come here without warning.” Mind you, no one had a key so the relationship wasn’t like that, but here’s why: I didn’t like someone coming to my apartment without an invitation, not even a text message or even a phone call… There was no warning. And I didn’t want anyone to come because I didn’t want any confrontation.”
Ripa then proceeded to read a line from Rancic’s memoir about what O’Connell told her during their breakup over the intercom: “No. Sorry, home girl. Things change, but you take care of yourself, okay?”
After Ripa asked him if he said that, O’Connell replied: “I don’t remember the exact wording, so I can’t deny that I said it. It doesn’t sound like something I would say. I mean, if I was writing a memoir, this would be a good quote,” he added. “I’ll applaud Giuliana for her colorful dialogue and all that.”
