Two years ago, the Google Play Store introduced Collections, a method that makes it easier to access thematically similar apps by grouping them into themes like Store, Listening, Food, and more. Shortly after, Google introduced several new Collections widgets, giving us quick access to these categories right from the home screen. Now, we’ve noticed that Google is working on the next evolution of Play Store widgets, splitting Collections into several separate widgets.

To do this, we will look at version 52.1.26-31 of the Play Store application for Android. Just like those Google Contacts changes we just reviewed for you, you won’t see any of the updates we’re covering here on your phone today.
Until now, you had a choice of two Play Store widgets with which you could access your collections. There’s a small widget with icons for individual collections, or a larger widget that lists your collections along the left edge. Depending on the size you’ve configured, you may not see all available collection types at once.

But Google is now working to make it easier to focus on the specific collections that matter most when choosing a widget. With this release, Google has begun preparing to give you the ability to select individual widgets for all your favorite collections:
In general, users should have a choice of eight: Food, Game, Listen, Read, Shopping, Social, Travel and Watch.
It’s not far enough yet that we can expand any of these new Collections widgets on the home screen to show you what they look like there and play with the sizes, but at least it’s a good first look at where things are headed.
