FW-DO: Seriously injured mountain biker rescued from impenetrable forested area

Yesterday afternoon, at around 18:00, the Dortmund fire department received a report of a serious bicycle accident in the Dortmund-Sieburg area.

A mountain biker fell seriously on a trail in a forested area between Federal Route 1 and Westhofenstrasse.

Fortunately, the victim in the accident was not alone. His companion immediately called 911, reported his location and said that his friend was in the woods and in severe pain after a serious fall.

The first emergency services arrived at the scene from Westhofenstrasse. Since ambulance access to the forested area is inaccessible, fire and rescue services had to reach the patient on foot.

After initial treatment, the suspicion of a cervical spine injury was confirmed. Due to the impassable terrain and inaccessibility, a careful rescue by land was impossible, despite the large number of rescuers. For this reason, a rescue helicopter was called to the scene.

An ambulance doctor from a rescue helicopter first lowered himself to the patient using a winch. After a comprehensive examination and effective pain management, the victim was stabilized for transport. He was then placed in a special rescue bag and taken out of the forest using a cable winch. The victim was then taken to Dortmund hospital for further medical care.

The operation was attended by members of the rescue service, the crew of the Christoph Dortmund rescue helicopter, as well as the emergency services of fire engine no. 4 and fire engine no. 14 of the Dortmund-Sieburg volunteer fire department.

Riding challenging mountain bike trails always comes with an increased risk of injury. Driving with an escort and having a mobile phone can make all the difference in providing quick assistance in an emergency.
