India’s injury problems threatened to worsen again after fast bowler Gurnur Brar was forced off the field during the closing stages of the first ODI against England at Edgbaston on Tuesday, July 14.

Playing his first international match in England, Gurnur produced one of the outstanding spells in the innings. However, at the end of the innings he stopped just before trying to complete his final. The right-arm seamer appeared to feel discomfort at the end of his run-up in the 48th over and immediately signaled towards the dressing room. Credit: Screenshot/JioStar

The Indian physiotherapist ran onto the field and stretched Gurnur’s calves and hamstrings for a few minutes. However, the pacer was unable to continue and left the ground, with Axar Patel finishing the rest of the over. The Indian team had no immediate information on the extent of the injury.

The sight of another fast bowler leaving the field will worry the Indian team management, especially given the number of injuries they have faced in recent weeks. Harshit Rana has already been ruled out of the rest of the England tour due to a hamstring injury during the T20I series, while all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy are also unavailable. India have also suffered a number of seemingly minor injuries over the past year that have snowballed into lengthy layoffs, making Gurnoor’s fitness another issue that the team will be closely monitoring ahead of the remaining two ODIs.

THE SPELL OF GURNUR BRARA against ENGLAND

Before his unfortunate exit, Gurnur had a memorable walk with the ball on English soil.

England reached 61 without loss after opting to bat, but a right-arm shot triggered a collapse that swung the game in India’s favour. After missing boundaries in his first overs, Gurnur adjusted his length brilliantly to strike twice in three deliveries.

He first dispossessed Jacob Bethell with a rising delivery that led to a deep catch, then removed the dangerous Ben Duckett with another ball that rose awkwardly off the surface. Duckett’s dismissal was made even better by Jasprit Bumrah’s superb running catch near the third man boundary.

The double knocks opened the floodgates as England slumped from 61 without loss to 107 for 6. Jasprit Bumrah, returning after a six-week break, and Prasidh Krishna then piled on the pressure with wickets at regular intervals.

England eventually recovered thanks to a fighting 121-run partnership between Joe Root and Liam Dawson for the seventh wicket. Root scored 76 and Dawson made a career-best 68 to help England bounce back from the brink to score 258.

Gurnur finished with 2 for 61 in nine overs, but India’s focus will now be on his fitness after another worrying injury on a tour that has already tested the strength of the team.
