The ball game club Borussia 09 e. V. Dortmund was founded on December 19, 1909 in Dortmund.

The licensed football department of BVB was separated from the ball club Borussia 09 eV and has been listed on the stock exchange since 1999 as Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA. Shareholders with higher stakes include sponsors Evonic, Signal Iduna and Puma. However, control over the club remains with the general partner of GmbH Borussia Dortmund Verwaltungs-GmbH, who continues to own 100 percent of the club’s shares.

Officially, the stadium has been called Signal-Iduna-Park since December 2005, although it is often also called Westfalenstadion, its former name.

With a capacity of 81,365 fans for national games, Signal Iduna Park is one of the largest football stadiums in Europe. During international games, when standing areas need to be converted into seats, the stadium can accommodate approximately 66,000 people.

In total, Borussia Dortmund have won 22 titles in the club’s history, including once in the top class: in 1997, Borussia beat Juventus Turin 3–1 in the final.

In addition to five victories in the German Cup, Dortmund have often won the national championship. With eight titles, they are the third most successful club after 1. Nuremberg (9 championships) and Bayern Munich (34 championships).

Michael Zorc has played the most competitive games in a BVB jersey (562 games from 1981 to 1998), followed by Mats Hummels (508 games from 2008 to 2024).

Dortmund’s top scorer is Adi Preissler, who scored 177 goals in 278 matches in the 1940s and 1950s. Just behind it is Marco Reus with 170 stalls.

The BVB had many outstanding players in its ranks, such as Matthias Sammer, Michael Zorc, Lars Ricken, Karl-Heinz Riedle, Jürgen Kohler, Stefan Reuther, Dede, Robert Lewandowski, Marco Reus, Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland and Mats Hummels.

Among the participants were well-known names. Under the leadership of Ottmar Hitzfeld, the club won the Champions League in addition to the championships in 1997, and Dortmund also collected several trophies under the leadership of Jurgen Klopp (including 2 championships, 2 DFB Cups), Thomas Tuchel (DFB Cup) and Matthias Sammer (championship).
