ASX shares rise 1.4% in best session in six weeks, oil falls after US and Iran pause missile attacks - as it happened

The ASX opened strongly, helping to ease fighting in the Middle East, with the US and Iran suspending their bombing campaigns.

At 12:00 AEST the ASX index was up 1.0% at 8,859 points.

Technology and mining stocks led the way, while energy and resource-rich utilities sectors were expected to be the biggest drags.

Despite the recent downturn in the US tech sector, ASX tech shares are generally higher today. WiseTech Global shares rose more than 5%.

Large mining companies are in demand. BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue rose by 1-2%.

Gold miners are especially busy. The All Ordinaries Gold Index rose 4.5% and the spot price rose this morning.

All banks rose in price: NAB added 0.9%.

Energy stocks are weak across the board. Santos shares fell 3.9% despite announcing the completion of first LNG deliveries from the Barossa LNG project in North America.

Oil refiners and fuel retailers also performed lower, as did coal miners.

At the other end of the pipeline, airline and travel stocks rose on the prospect of cheaper fuel. Virgin Australia shares rose 7%.

Gold miners dominate the ASX 200 index with shares in Capricorn Metals rising 13.7% as reserve estimates were upgraded.

Energy shares were outperformed by market leaders, with Brazilian oil and gas company Karoon Energy down 8.4%.
