PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — After more than 35 years on air, beloved 6abc/WPVI-TV Action News Chief Meteorologist Cecily Tynan announced Thursday that she is retiring. Her last broadcast will be on Monday, August 31st.
During her career at the station, Tainan provided daily forecasts and live coverage of some of the region’s most severe weather events. She took viewers through Hurricane Sandy, the blizzard of 1996, devastating tornadoes, record heat waves and historic floods, as well as famous seasonal TV specials that detailed regional snowfall forecasts and weather changes.
“From the moment she first stepped off the elevator and joined Action News, Cecily has become a trusted voice for viewers, a leader in our newsroom and one of the most talented anchors in Philadelphia,” said WPVI-TV CEO John Morris. “Whether leading us through storms or being part of our holiday traditions, Cecily has been a part of our lives for a long time. As much as our viewers miss her, we will miss her even more.”
“I have been honored to be a member of the 6abc Action News team for more than three decades, starting as the station’s first-ever weekend meteorologist and then becoming the first female chief meteorologist. I’m proud of the work we’ve done and grateful to 6abc viewers for trusting me with their weather forecasts,” Tynan said. “Now, instead of predicting snow, I’m looking forward to spending the winter in Florida water skiing, traveling and spending lots of time with my husband Greg, two grown children Luke and Emma and three rescue pups Nahla, Shelby and Charlie. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Tynan joined 6abc as a weekend weather anchor and general assignment reporter in 1995 and became chief meteorologist in 2009. Since 2024, she has been an Action News weather commentator and chief meteorologist for the 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. newscasts, as well as the 6:30 p.m. streaming edition. Previously, she hosted the Saturday night public service show Primetime Weekend.

She also has a long-standing association with ABC News, making several guest appearances on “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight.” Most recently, Tynan served as the Liberty Bell correspondent in Philadelphia during ABC’s 24-hour “Disney Celebrates America” broadcast.
During her time at 6abc, she was named Philadelphia Weekly’s Top Weathercaster and Philadelphia Magazine’s Top Weathercaster.
Prior to joining WPVI-TV, Tynan was a weather and news anchor on KTNV’s “Good Morning Las Vegas.” She has received the “Best On-Air Talent” award from the Las Vegas Electronic Media Awards and “Best Weather Commentator” from the Las Vegas Review Journal. She began her career as a weekend weather anchor and general assignment reporter for WDBJ in Roanoke, Virginia.
Tynan, a Connecticut native, holds a double degree in journalism and politics after graduating magna cum laude from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. After graduation, Tynan completed his studies and training in meteorology to gain approval from the American Meteorological Society.
She is a competitive aquatic slalom and quadruple sub-3 hour marathon runner and is a former world class professional duathlete and a top 10 age group finisher at the 2003 Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. Today, she continues to participate in charity races in the Delaware Valley and is actively involved in animal welfare.
