A new heat wave has been announced - will it be followed by a week-long drought?

After an uncomfortable, windy and wet weekend, a new heat wave is expected to hit Germany over the next few days. In France, temperatures are already above 30°C again.

Starting Thursday, temperatures should again be consistently above that mark throughout the day, even in the west. Some weather models are even expecting peaks of up to 36°C by next week. However, major heat storms like last week likely won’t occur.

Not a single drop of rain could fall in parts of North Rhine-Westphalia until July 20th. For example, the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) weather model, in its long-range forecast for the next 14 days, does not call for rainfall in parts of Cologne. DWD’s long-range forecast calls for little to no rain over the next ten days, with the exception of a few variations in weather patterns.

It is still unclear whether the heat of the Azores will actually bring us local temperatures of 35 to 40 °C. Meteorologists estimate the odds of a longer heat wave to be 50:50. They say that there is a plausible development of events, but there is no reliable forecast yet.

However, parched soil and heated land masses can support a heat bell from below. It will only be decided in the next few days whether this will lead to the formation of a high surrounded by two areas of low pressure and therefore very stable with hot air trapped. Either way, it’s getting a little warmer every day this week.

Between areas of low pressure over Scandinavia and a broad high over Western Europe, warm Atlantic air flows southwest and cooler air flows north.

Rain and heavy clouds will continue in the north and east Tuesday evening. Otherwise partly or slightly cloudy, variable clear and no precipitation. Minimum 18-10 degrees.

Tuesday will be cloudy and rainy in the north and east. It will turn to heavy rain throughout the day, later easing out of the west. The southwestern half is clear to sunny and mostly dry. Moderate to fresh winds from the west to northwest, with strong gusts and gales in the north and northeast. There are squalls on the coasts and in the mountains.
