It’s not often that drivers turn down a job in Formula 1, but that’s exactly what Patricio (Pato) O’Ward is doing. The 27-year-old Mexican works for McLaren, primarily in the IndyCar Series (7 pole positions, 10 race wins, 33 podiums, second overall in 2025), while at the same time serving as a Grand Prix reserve in case Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri are unavailable.
Now taking part in Formula 1 training in Mexico and Abu Dhabi from 2022 to 2025, O’Ward tells the Speed Street podcast: “I’m grateful for the experience I’ve been able to gain in the world of Formula 1. Driving Formula 1 cars, especially in the last few years, has been incredible, just seeing what race cars like these can do. But now I’m at a different stage in my life and it’s not that important to me.” more”.
“I don’t feel anything in myself that would encourage me to continue working as a reserve driver in Formula 1. I’m doing great in IndyCar racing. I love this series. That’s where I want to be, and only there.”
O’Ward continued: “I’m not going to be driving in 2026 so I’ve politely asked to be relieved of all my Formula 1 duties. I want to focus on my priorities. I want to be able to train more, eat better and be better prepared for 2027.”
