On Wednesday, it was announced that Mehta is a proponent of creating a data center in Sturgeon County, northeast of Edmonton.
In a press release Wednesday, the company behind social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram said it will invest more than $13 billion in the one-gigawatt project.
Meta also promises to invest $60 million to improve local infrastructure.
The company said the project will use a closed-loop liquid cooling system with “dry cooling” to eliminate the operational use of water.
Meta says this data center will be the first in Canada.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith joined Meta officials and Sturgeon County Mayor Alanna Hnativ at a news conference held in Calgary to make the announcement.
