In its annual report, the National Education Ombudsman said there had been a significant increase in the number of complaints, particularly regarding mental health issues.
The mental health of young people is at the heart of many calls for mediation in national education. It is this kind of mediation that students, parents or teaching staff turn to when trying to find a solution with the administration. According to BFMTV, such requests are becoming more and more frequent.
In its annual report, the National Education Intermediary showed that over the past five years the number of applications has increased by 60%. Starting from middle school, mental health problem occurs mainly in 4th grade and then in 1st grade. “Because he has school phobia, because there was a crisis in the family, for various reasons that are related to people’s lives (…), we can sign the paper by choosing the wrong option, choosing the wrong specialty or sending the file too late, at the wrong time,” illustrates Catherine Becchetti-Bizot, mediator at the National Education.
Mediator’s recommendations
The 2018 undergraduate reform introduced a new source of stress: continuous assessment. “It’s very worrying because if a student doesn’t progress between October and February, they say to themselves, ‘It’s all screwed up,’ especially in first grade.”
To combat this discomfort among students, the mediator recommended a number of measures. She wants to double the number of school nurses, provide emergency rooms for students who feel the need, or better yet, train staff on mental health issues.
