Vedanta Power's first-quarter sales rose 38% year-on-year to 5.225 million units

Vedanta Power Limited reported a strong start to the financial year 2026-27 with power sales growing 38 percent year-on-year to 5.225 million units in the quarter ended June 30, 2026. However, sales were 6 percent lower compared to 5.530 million units in the March quarter.

The company said the quarter covered both pre- and post-demerger periods as Vedanta Power was demerged from Vedanta Limited in the first quarter of FY27. He therefore noted that comparisons with previous periods should be viewed in that context.

Meenakshi Energy drives sales growth

Meenakshi Energy recorded the sharpest growth in the quarter with power sales touching 1,350 million units. This represents an increase of 245 percent compared to 391 million units in the same period last year and 16 percent compared to 1.161 million units in the fourth quarter of FY2026.

The company noted that the previous year’s quarter reflected the operation of a single 300 MW unit, and the latest quarterly performance was based on the plant’s expanded operating capacity of 1,000 MW.

Power sales from Talwandi Sabo Thermal Power Station stood at 2.723 million units, little changed from 2.715 million units in the first quarter of FY26. As a result, sales rose 14 percent from 2.386 million units in the previous quarter.

The plant availability rate during the quarter was 86 percent, compared to 90 percent a year earlier and 77 percent in the fourth quarter of FY2026. Vedanta Power said the power purchase agreement with the Punjab government provides for compensation based on the plant’s regulatory availability of 80 percent, while availability remained above this level in the first quarter.

Shakti’s operations suffer due to boiler incident

Shakti Thermal Power Plant’s sales for the quarter were 465 million units, down 57 percent from 1,087 million units in Q4 FY26. The plant recorded no sales in the corresponding quarter of last year.

The company attributed this to a decrease in the operational availability of the power plant following the boiler incident on April 14, 2026. The facility, formerly known as the Athena Power Station, remained temporarily closed following the incident.

Sales of Jharsuguda increased marginally compared to last year

Jharsuguda Thermal Power Plant sold 687 million units of power in the first quarter of FY27, up 1 percent from 678 million units a year earlier. However, on a sequential basis, sales fell 23 percent from 896 million units.

The plant availability rate increased sharply to 93 percent from 66 percent in the year-ago quarter, while remaining broadly stable compared to 94 percent in the fourth quarter of FY2026.
