Agent: Donovan Mitchell signs new four-year deal with Cavs

Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell has agreed to a four-year contract extension worth a maximum of $273 million that includes a player option for the 2030-31 season and a full forward trade, CAA co-head of basketball operations Austin Brown told ESPN on Tuesday.

According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Mitchell could wait until next summer and play an extra season worth an additional $80 million on the deal (five years and $353 million). Instead, he committed to a long-term extension on the first day he became eligible for a new contract, reaffirming his commitment to Cleveland. Mitchell was entering the final guaranteed season of his contract before the 2027 player option, which has now been replaced by a new deal.

Mitchell, 29, has repeatedly professed his love for the Cavaliers and Cleveland since his 2022 offseason trade from the Utah Jazz. The new deal marks Mitchell’s second contract extension since arriving in Cleveland.

On May 26, the night the Cavaliers were eliminated by the New York Knicks in four games in the Eastern Conference Finals, Mitchell said he had “unfinished business” trying to get the city a ring.

“I feel sorry for the city of Cleveland,” Mitchell told reporters. “So that it would be like this with the cleansing. This is an ass. But I told you all last year and I say it again, we will be back. We’ll be ready. We’ll be hungry. And we will be locked.”

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and president of basketball operations Koby Altman spoke with Mitchell and Brown after the seven-time NBA All-Star was able to secure a new extension and quickly reached an agreement on a major decision for the franchise. Mitchell has played a significant role in the Cavaliers’ efforts to improve their roster in recent years.

Mitchell would also support the Cavaliers reuniting with LeBron James if James decides to sign with Cleveland, sources said. The Cavaliers are among the leading contenders for James, along with Miami, Golden State, Philadelphia and Minnesota.

Mitchell was an All-Star in all four seasons in Cleveland and was named to the All-NBA team three times (First Team in 2025 and Second Team in 2023 and 2026). During his time with the Cavaliers, he averaged 26.7 points, 5.3 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game, leading the team to the playoffs each season after the team missed the postseason four years in a row. Last season, Mitchell reached the conference finals for the first time in his nine-year career.
