According to the Wall Street Journal, a US official said the attack was carried out by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The attack comes as President Trump heads to an important NATO meeting in Ankara, Türkiye.

Graham Platner was recently selected as the Democratic candidate to take on incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in Maine.

It’s an important seat in November’s midterm elections – Democrats likely won’t be able to win control of the Senate unless they defeat Ms Collins.

Mr. Platner has been plagued by scandals before – previously having to explain a Nazi-linked tattoo, a history of bigoted Reddit posts and some extramarital sexting.

It looks like the sexual assault charge was the last straw.

“Graham Platner should immediately withdraw from the Democratic nomination for the Senate,” said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.

He called the allegation “incredibly disturbing.”

The woman accusing Mr. Platner of assaulting her, Jenny Racicot, spoke to CNN today, saying she doesn’t believe he could have thought their encounter was consensual.

“When someone in the middle of all this says, don’t touch me, it’s clearly not consensual.”

He denies any wrongdoing.
