"Odyssey": the first reactions to the epic film about Christopher Nolan are off the charts

Christoper Nolan’s The Odyssey has finally been unveiled to the film press, who are calling the Oscar-winning adaptation of Homer’s epic a “stunning achievement” with “impeccable filmmaking.” It looks like Nolan has another huge hit on his hands.

“A celebration of filmmaking,” wrote Collider’s Peri Nemiroff. “A superb and enthralling performance of Homer’s epic, uniquely Christopher Nolan’s. It is truly difficult to imagine any other director on the planet being able to bring this source material to the screen with such scale, scope and heart.”

Film Talk editor-in-chief Andrew J. Salazar called the film a “stunning achievement,” and IndieWire’s David Ehrlich noted that the “final act rewards the journey,” despite some clunkiness along the way.

“Immaculate filmmaking, every inch as epic as you’d expect,” raved film journalist Simon Thompson. “Leading a stellar cast, Matt Damon gives Odysseus everything in his career-best performance. Robert Pattinson is outstanding as Antinous and John Leguizamo’s Eumaeus is superb.”

DiversityJazz Tangcay magazine called the film “an astounding achievement” and a “triumphant, enthralling epic,” with the publication’s awards expert Clayton Davis noting, “Matt Damon leads with tenacity and Tom Holland brings sensitivity and heart… This is another Nolan hit that his diehards will digest for decades to come.”

Fandango’s Eric Davis shared praise for Robert Pattinson, writing, “He’s so devious, manipulative, and endlessly entertaining to watch. Pattinson fully embraces the character’s villainy, resulting in one of my favorite performances from him.” He also called the film “an absolute triumph and the supreme cinematic achievement of one of the greatest directors of our time.”

Matt Damon helms The Odyssey in the titular role of Odysseus as the film chronicles his harrowing, multi-year journey to return home to his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland) after the end of the Trojan War. The extensive ensemble cast also includes Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal and many more.

The Odyssey is the first full-length feature film to be shot entirely on Imax cameras. Nolan previously told Empire magazine that he “shot over 2 million feet of film” while filming The Odyssey, which took 91 days to shoot last year.

“As a director, you look for gaps in cinematic culture, things that haven’t been done before,” Nolan told Empire magazine about why he decided to adapt Homer’s Greek epic. “And what I saw was that all these great mythological cinematic works that I grew up with – the Ray Harryhausen films and other things – I had never seen them made with the kind of weight and credibility that an A-budget and a big Hollywood IMAX film could bring.”

The Odyssey opens in Universal Pictures theaters July 17. Read more about the first reactions in the posts below.
