Alexander Isak was born on September 21, 1999 in Solna, Sweden, to Eritrean parents. He grew up in the middle-class Ulriksdal area and joined AIK Fotboll at the age of six. Isak has always had a deep connection with Eritrea, a small country in the Horn of Africa. He also returned to his country to become more familiar with the land of his ancestors, as well as to raise awareness among his fans about the cultural richness of Eritrea, often unknown internationally.

Alexander Isak played his first professional match in February 2016 at the Swedish Cup when he was just 16 years old and scored his first goal. On his 17th birthday, in a match against DjurgÃ¥rden, he scored his first double in his professional career. In January 2017, when it was announced that he was close to Real Madrid, Isak joined Borussia Dortmund for €9 million, becoming the fourth most expensive under-17 player in history. However, he will have very limited playing time in Germany, starting only once in the entire 2017/2018 season. After a transfer to Spain and several seasons with Real Sociedad, Isak signed a contract with Newcastle from August 2022 to 2028 for €71 million plus bonuses of up to €5 million, becoming the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

Transfer of Alexander Isak to Liverpool

During the 2025 summer transfer window, Isak joined Liverpool in the final hours of the transfer for approximately €150 million – a sum that made him the most expensive player in the history of the club and the entire Premier League. He scored his first goal in a Reds shirt on 24 September 2025 in the League Cup against Southampton, thanks to an assist from Federico Chiesa.

On 22 December 2025, Isak suffered an ankle injury and a fractured fibula, which required surgery and kept him out for several months. The injury seriously hampers his first season under the Liverpool flag.

Alexander Isak and Sweden

Isak made his international debut on 8 January 2017, aged just 17 years and 109 days, becoming the second youngest player to play for Sweden. Four days later, he scored a goal against Slovakia to become the youngest scorer in Swedish qualifying history, erasing a record set in 1912. During Euro 2020, he started in three Euro 2020 group matches and played a decisive role, providing several assists, including one in the round of 16 against Ukraine.

Described as a true “modern striker”, Isak combines an impressive aerial game thanks to his 1.96m height with good technical ability allowing him to operate in small spaces. His composure in front of goal, his intelligent positioning and defensive qualities are also highlighted, as is his ability to play as a left winger, using his speed and strength.
