EastEnders reveals the return of its main villain in early iPlayer release

EastEnders spoilers follow from Monday’s (29 June) first episode, which is currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer but has not yet been broadcast on television.

EastEnders aired Gray Atkins’ ominous return to the show – with big problems sure to follow for Chelsea Fox.

Toby-Alexander Smith reprized his role as Gray in a guest appearance, which ties into Chelsea’s ongoing storyline involving her young son Jordan.

Monday’s first episode began with a sneak peek of Gray in prison, where he is serving time for a series of murders.

He later reappeared when his grandmother Sheila visited him in prison – and her true intentions finally became clear.

When they met face to face in the prison visiting room, Gray initially complained that Sheila had kept her distance rather than supporting him in recent years.

While Sheila didn’t apologize for staying away from the convicted killer, she suggested it was time to band together to ensure regular access to her great-grandson Jordan.

“(Chelsea) doesn’t want him to know who I am,” Sheila complained. “And she won’t tell her family about me.

“I insisted on spending time with him, put pressure on her, and now she may not let me see him again. She’s his mother—you’re here, and she can do whatever she likes.”

Handing Gray a current photograph of Jordan, she added: “He is truly special. The thought that I wouldn’t see him again… I tried to call Chelsea, she didn’t listen.

“You and she had a life together. If anyone knows how to reach her, it’s you. If I’m going to see Jordan again, I need your help.”

Can Gray find a way to help Sheila achieve her goals while behind bars?

News of Grey’s return first leaked in May, although show bosses were tight-lipped about the exact storyline for his return at the time.

Toby later told Mirror: “Gray was a brilliant character. Playing Gray was a gift and it will be interesting to see what four years in prison will do for someone like him.

“His personality, you know, was very strong and controlling and very manipulative. Being in prison would take away a lot of that personality. So it was interesting to tap into that psychology.”

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One. The show also airs on BBC iPlayer, with most episodes airing early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
