A UK Reform Party councilor has resigned less than two months after being elected.

Craig Wiles was one of three Reform candidates chosen to represent Almondbury ward on Kirklees council on May 7.

Confirming his resignation, the council said by-elections would take place in due course, with the reform group saying there would be “no interruption to the work already underway”.

Group leader Sarah Wood declined to comment further when asked for details about why Wiles resigned.

In an online statement, Wood said: “We look forward to taking part in the upcoming by-election and continuing to serve, support and represent the people of Almondbury.

“In the meantime, Colonel Pip Harvey and Colonel Gill Floyd will continue to ensure strong representation for the people of Almondbury, ensuring there is no disruption to the work already underway.”

Kirklees Council said a date for the by-election will be chosen in the coming days and is expected to take place within the next six weeks.
