Left-arm taking over: Zaheer Khan appointed as CSK head coach after Stephen Fleming’s exit

Zaheer Khan Appointed Chennai Super Kings Head Coach, Replacing Stephen Fleming

NEW DELHI — Chennai Super Kings on Monday announced the appointment of former India pace bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach, marking a significant leadership transition for the five-time IPL champions.

A New Era for CSK After Stephen Fleming’s Departure

Zaheer Khan takes over the reins from Stephen Fleming, who coached CSK from 2009 until 2024. The franchise parted ways with Fleming following a third consecutive season without a playoff appearance, prompting the search for new leadership.

CSK confirmed the appointment on X (formerly Twitter), posting: “Left Arm ‘Taking’ Over! Welcoming Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach of Chennai Super Kings.”

Zaheer Khan’s Illustrious Playing Career

Before stepping into coaching, Khan built one of the most respected careers in Indian cricket. He represented India in 92 Tests, 200 ODIs, and 17 T20 Internationals, finishing with 610 wickets across formats. During India’s 2011 ODI World Cup triumph, he was the team’s highest wicket-taker with 21 scalps.

In the IPL, Khan made 100 appearances and claimed 102 wickets at an impressive average of 27.27, representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals as a player.

From Player to Administrator and Mentor

After retiring from the IPL in 2017, Khan transitioned into team management and development roles. He joined Mumbai Indians as Director of Cricket Operations ahead of the 2019 season and later became the franchise’s head of global development.

Most recently, he served as mentor for Lucknow Super Giants during IPL 2025 before departing the franchise ahead of the subsequent season, opening the door for his CSK appointment.

CSK’s Recent Struggles and the Road Ahead

Chennai Super Kings’ failure to reach the playoffs in three straight seasons represents a rare rough patch for one of the IPL’s most successful franchises. The appointment of Khan — a India cricket legend with deep administrative experience — signals CSK’s intent to return to championship contention.

Khan brings a unique blend of on-field credibility, front-office experience, and understanding of the IPL ecosystem. His left-arm seam bowling expertise and extensive network across world cricket could prove valuable as CSK rebuilds its squad and strategy.

What Zaheer Khan Brings to CSK

Unlike a pure coaching appointment, Khan’s profile combines strategic cricket knowledge with organizational leadership. Having operated at both the director and mentor levels, he understands modern franchise cricket from multiple angles — player development, talent scouting, match strategy, and franchise operations.

CSK fans and analysts will watch closely as Khan settles into the role heading into the next IPL season, with expectations high for a return to form from the Gujarat-born franchise.
