Over 300 residents of Vellankovil, near Gobichettipalayam, took out a silent procession on Saturday (June 27, 2026) to pay tribute to actor-director K Bhagyaraj, who passed away earlier in the day.
The procession was organized by villagers and childhood friends of Bhagyaraj to mourn the death of the director, who was born and brought up in Vellankovil.
Participants gathered near Anna Tidal where they paid floral tributes to Bhagyaraj’s portrait. With black badges and lit candles, they began a procession through the village.
The march took place along the main streets of Wellanquil, including the area where Bhagyaraj spent his childhood, his ancestral home and the school where he studied. The almost two-kilometer procession ended at Anna Tidal, where participants honored his memory with a minute of silence.
Residents said they had gathered to pay tribute to the eminent son of the village, whose contribution to Tamil cinema had earned him widespread admiration.
