Sources: Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. could play in Week 3

Michael Penix Jr. Return Timeline Gives Falcons a Clearer Quarterback Outlook

The Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback situation is finally becoming easier to define. According to a report dated Sept. 20, 2026, Michael Penix Jr. is nearing a return and could make his 2026 debut Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers.

That remains a possibility, not a confirmed activation. Penix has missed the first two games while recovering from a torn ACL, and the report describes a possible Week 3 return rather than a finalized clearance. He did split reps with Cooper Rush during the previous week, however, giving Atlanta a meaningful indicator of his preparation.

Michael Penix Jr. return: Thursday against Green Bay is the next checkpoint

A Week 3 return has been the target for Penix, and a short week is not an ideal setting for him to play for the first time this season. Even so, his recent participation in team drills suggests that Atlanta has been preparing for the possibility rather than waiting until game day.

People who watched Penix practice reportedly found his work impressive. If he is cleared and contributes effectively, his skill set could give the Falcons’ offense a new dimension. The immediate question is whether he can return safely and at a level that changes the team’s performance.

Current status: Penix’s Thursday debut is reported as possible, while no final activation announcement is included in the Sept. 20 report.

Cooper Rush and Tua Tagovailoa remain in Atlanta’s plan

Rush is scheduled to make his second straight start Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. Tagovailoa, who suffered an oblique injury while preparing to start in Week 1, is officially listed as doubtful for that game but is expected to be involved in practice during the coming week.

Tagovailoa could therefore be available Thursday against Green Bay, giving the Falcons another veteran quarterback option. His presence also means Atlanta may soon have Penix, Rush, Tagovailoa and Strand healthy at the same time.

Tua Tagovailoa’s role could extend beyond Sunday

Sources cited in the report do not expect the Falcons to move on from Tagovailoa, even if all four quarterbacks become healthy. He signed a one-year contract at the veteran’s minimum worth $1.2 million, giving Atlanta considerable flexibility.

If Tagovailoa plays effectively, he could serve as a backup in the event of an injury. A trade before the NFL’s Nov. 10 deadline is another possibility if he performs well, but that is a scenario rather than an announced decision.

Falcons’ quarterback decision tree after Green Bay

  1. If Penix plays: He would give Atlanta its preferred starting choice, with Rush and Tagovailoa remaining available as veteran depth.
  2. If Tagovailoa plays: He could start or come off the bench, while Penix would remain the quarterback Atlanta appears most prepared to restart with.
  3. If neither plays: Rush would remain the apparent starting option, and the next game would not be until Monday, Oct. 5, at the New Orleans Saints, providing additional recovery time.

The schedule gives the Falcons room to evaluate their options without being forced into an immediate roster decision. It also means Penix’s return does not have to happen on one specific night to matter.

Cooper Rush’s Week 1 performance raises the stakes

Rush completed 12 of 22 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Atlanta’s season-opening loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The report lists his QBR at 2.6, the lowest mark in the league in Week 1.

Those numbers make Penix’s potential return especially important, but they do not make his activation automatic. Rush gave Atlanta a workable short-term plan, while the remaining recovery time and Thursday matchup still leave room for the quarterback competition to evolve.

Jack Strand is expected to back up Rush

According to Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski, undrafted rookie Jack Strand is expected to be the backup Sunday against Carolina. His role would primarily be developmental unless an injury or a roster move creates a larger opportunity.

Bottom line: Penix’s return could reshape Atlanta’s offense

The Falcons now have several viable paths. Penix offers the clearest opportunity to change the offense if he can return safely. Rush provides experience and continuity, while Tagovailoa’s affordable contract gives Atlanta another flexible option.

Until an official status changes, Thursday against Green Bay should be viewed as a meaningful possibility rather than a certainty. For Atlanta, however, even the prospect of Penix rejoining the lineup is a significant step forward.
