Nebraska Volleyball’s 2026 Ameritas Players Challenge: Schedule, TV and Key Storylines

No. 1 Nebraska enters the Ameritas Players Challenge with a national ranking, a program-record indoor crowd and a 50-match regular-season home win streak. The three-day tournament at John Cook Arena gives the Huskers two opportunities to carry that momentum into wins: Friday against No. 25 North Carolina and Sunday against FGCU.

North Carolina also faces FGCU on Saturday, creating a compact schedule with three conference and national-power matchups. Here is the complete Nebraska volleyball schedule, TV and streaming information, radio coverage and the statistics shaping the event.

North Carolina History and FGCU’s First Nebraska Meeting

Friday’s opener offers Nebraska a familiar ranked opponent in North Carolina. The Huskers and Tar Heels have split their two previous meetings, with the most recent taking place in 1996. North Carolina won that five-set match, making Friday the first meeting between the programs in three decades.

The Sunday matchup against Florida Gulf Coast University presents a different question. Nebraska and FGCU have never met, leaving the Huskers without shared series history to reference. FGCU’s Saturday match against North Carolina will give the Eagles their first tournament match before facing the top-ranked Huskers.

North Carolina’s schedule means the Tar Heels will compete on consecutive days, while Nebraska will play twice over the three-day event. That structure makes recovery, rotation depth and consistency across matches important parts of the challenge.

No. 1 Nebraska and the Latest AVCA Coaches Poll

The AVCA Coaches Poll released Sept. 14 places Nebraska first nationally with 1,560 points, 33 points ahead of No. 2 Pitt. The top five are:

  • No. 1 Nebraska: 1,560 points
  • No. 2 Pitt: 1,527 points
  • No. 3 Louisville: 1,419 points
  • No. 4 Kentucky: 1,370 points
  • No. 5 SMU: 1,206 points

Nebraska received 48 first-place votes, while Pitt received the remaining 15. The ranking marks the Huskers’ 127th week at No. 1 in AVCA Coaches Poll history, the most for any program.

The national position provides valuable context, but Friday’s match will be Nebraska’s first on-court test of the challenge. The Huskers enter with the country’s top opposing hitting percentage, a record-setting home environment and a middle-blocker coming off her first Big Ten Player of the Week honor.

Manaia Ogbechie Leads Nebraska’s Blocking Identity

Sophomore middle blocker Manaia Ogbechie was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday, earning the first selection of her career. She also became the first Nebraska player to receive the honor since Andi Jackson on Nov. 10, 2025.

Ogbechie helped lead Nebraska to a 3-0 week against New Mexico, No. 20 Baylor and Georgia Tech. She produced 33 kills at a .547 hitting percentage while adding 12 blocks. According to the team’s statistics, she was the only player nationally to hit above .540 with at least 53 swings during the week.

Her performance reflects a broader strength for Nebraska. Through eight matches, the Huskers are third in the Big Ten and 14th nationally at 2.80 blocks per set. Key figures include:

  • Manaia Ogbechie: 27 blocks and 1.35 blocks per set, the fourth-best rate in the Big Ten
  • Andi Jackson: 25 blocks, including a season-high six against Creighton
  • Team depth: Seven players have recorded double-digit blocks this season
  • Team totals: Four matches with at least 10 blocks, including nine against Creighton

Ogbechie’s seven blocks against No. 2 Texas on Aug. 30 remain her season high. Jackson has now recorded at least five blocks in three matches, giving Nebraska two consistent forces along the net.

Red Zone Record and Nebraska’s Two-Way Dominance

Nebraska’s No. 1 ranking is supported by exceptional production in both directions. The Huskers were the first team since at least 2014 to finish first nationally in both hitting percentage and opposing hitting percentage. Last season, Nebraska’s offense hit at a school-record .351 pace and surpassed .400 in nine matches.

The defense has been equally consistent. Nebraska led the country in opposing hitting percentage in 2022, 2023 and 2025, limiting opponents to .129 last season. Through eight matches in 2026, the Huskers have reduced that figure to .085, including holding Creighton to -.033.

Nebraska is currently the only team holding opponents below .100 hitting; Lehigh is next at .106. The offense is hitting .312, ninth nationally and third in the Big Ten. That creates a +.227 hitting margin, the best in the country and ahead of Michigan State’s +.218 mark.

24-0 in 2026 sets when Nebraska reaches the red zone first, following a 96-0 mark in 2025.

The red zone begins when a team reaches 20 points first. Under head coach Dani Busboom Kelly, Nebraska is 120-0 in sets when achieving that position, demonstrating how effectively the Huskers finish matches after taking control.

The Huskers have also generated 21 runs of five or more unanswered points through eight matches. Their longest streak reached 10 points in the opening sets against No. 2 Texas and New Mexico. Those stretches provide another clear indicator of Nebraska’s ability to build leads quickly and apply sustained pressure.

Record Crowd Strengthens Nebraska’s Devaney Advantage

Nebraska recently set a program record for its largest indoor home crowd. A crowd of 15,405 at Pinnacle Bank Arena watched the Huskers sweep No. 20 Creighton, surpassing the previous record of 13,870 set against UCLA at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in 2009.

It was the eighth home match in program history to draw at least 11,000 fans. The attendance milestone adds to an already formidable home record: Nebraska has won 50 consecutive regular-season matches at the Devaney Center, a streak dating to the start of the 2023 season.

The broader home win streak reached 63 matches before No. 6 Texas A&M ended it in the Regional Final. That run is tied for the fifth-longest in NCAA history. Nebraska’s all-time record remains 90 consecutive home victories from 2004-09, while Penn State holds the national record at 94 from 2006-10.

The Huskers also won all 22 of their home matches in 2024, a school record. With the Ameritas Players Challenge taking place at John Cook Arena in the Bob Devaney Sports Center complex, that crowd and home-court tradition will be major parts of the weekend.

What Nebraska Fans Should Watch

Friday’s match against North Carolina combines a No. 25 opponent with more than 25 years of history since the programs’ previous meeting. Sunday’s first Nebraska-FGCU match offers a fresh test of whether the Huskers can sustain their elite defense, strong hitting margin and red-zone record against a new opponent.

The most important indicators are Ogbechie and Jackson’s impact at the net, Nebraska’s ability to keep opponents below .100 hitting and the Huskers’ record run of 120 straight red-zone sets won. A strong crowd response could add another familiar advantage at John Cook Arena.

For viewers, Friday’s Nebraska-North Carolina match starts at 7 p.m. on BTN and FOX Sports. Nebraska’s noon match against FGCU Sunday will stream on B1G+, with all Huskers action available through Huskers.com, the Huskers App and the Huskers Radio Network.
