Former Senator Jon Kyl Dies at 84

Former Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl, R‑Ariz., passed away at the age of 84, his family announced on Thursday. The veteran lawmaker had been stepping away from public life since December 2025 after receiving a diagnosis of a neurological condition that led to dementia.

Early Life and Congressional Beginnings

Before his Senate tenure, Kyl served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995, representing Arizona’s congressional districts. He entered national politics during a period of growing Republican influence in the Southwest and quickly became known for his work on fiscal policy and national security.

Senate Service, Retirement and Brief Return

Kyl was first sworn into the Senate in 1995 and served continuously until his retirement in 2013. After the death of Senator John McCain in 2018, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey appointed Kyl to fill the vacant seat, marking a brief return to the chamber later that year. Throughout his Senate career, he was recognized for his work on judiciary matters, tax reform, and foreign relations, eventually rising to the role of Minority Whip.

Tributes from Arizona Leaders and Family Statement

Following the announcement of his passing, former Governor Doug Ducey expressed his grief on social media, writing: “Jon Kyl gave Arizona nearly three decades of principled, thoughtful leadership — and he gave me something just as valuable: his mentorship and friendship. I’ll miss him deeply. Rest in peace, Senator Kyl.”

Former Senator Jeff Flake, who served alongside Kyl, also paid homage: “Arizona has lost a giant. Jon Kyl was one of the most diligent and effective public servants Arizona has ever had. I was honored to follow him in the U.S. Senate, where his example of seriousness, integrity and devotion to public service was known to all. Cheryl and I send our deepest condolences to Caryll and the entire Kyl family.”

The family’s statement noted that Kyl had announced his departure from public life in December 2025 after being diagnosed with a neurological disease that resulted in dementia. No further details about memorial services have been released at this time.
