MLB execs, insiders on 2026 playoff favorites, biggest threats

MLB Playoff Predictions 2026: Teams to Beat and Potential Sleepers

As the 2026 Major League Baseball regular season winds down, the postseason picture is becoming clearer. A panel of 16 executives and scouts around baseball, none affiliated with a contending team, shared their views on the top contenders and potential dark‑horse teams in each league. Their collective insight highlights the Milwaukee Brewers as the team to beat in the National League and the New York Yankees as the favorite in the American League, while also identifying several sleeper teams that could make a deep run.

National League: Team to Beat

The Milwaukee Brewers edged out the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs to be named the top team in the National League, receiving five votes compared to four for Philadelphia and one for Chicago. The Brewers’ strength lies in their pitching staff, which insiders say is even deeper than a year ago.

NL scout: “The Brewers’ offense — especially at home — can hang with anyone. They even hit home runs there. With home‑field advantage, I don’t worry about them scoring. But it’s Jacob Misiorowski and Logan Henderson that give me more confidence this time around than last year when I picked them. That one‑two combo can hang with the Dodgers.”

NL executive: “I like the Brewers. Their young players don’t ever seem fazed by the moment. And there could be some weakness with the Dodgers if [Shohei] Ohtani can’t be himself [and pitch]. Milwaukee is just a little bit better in all phases plus has more pitching than a year ago. Miz can match up with anyone.”

The Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs are viewed as the biggest threats to the Brewers, with Philadelphia’s veteran core and Chicago’s offense posing challenges in a potential playoff matchup.

American League: Team to Beat

In the American League, the New York Yankees are widely regarded as the team to beat, especially with the returns of Aaron Judge and Carlos Rodón. However, the panel’s votes were split between the Tampa Bay Rays (4 votes) and the Boston Red Sox (3), underscoring the AL East’s competitiveness.

NL scout: “I love the Yankees now. Judge is back. [Carlos] Rodon is back. Even without [Giancarlo] Stanton, that offense is dangerous, especially at Yankee Stadium. [Max] Fried hasn’t been going deep in games, but they have so much pitching, they may not need him to. And anyone who hasn’t seen Cam Schlittler pitch is in for a treat.”

AL executive: “The Yankees have been the best team in the AL all season, they just didn’t know it. Does that make sense? The injuries are the only thing that’s held them back. They just have every key ingredient for the postseason.”

The Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox are considered the primary challengers, with the Rays’ consistent performance and the Red Sox’s deep bullpen offering potential obstacles to New York’s dominance.

NL Sleeper Teams

When asked about sleeper teams in the National League, the San Diego Padres emerged as the top choice with seven votes. The Chicago Cubs followed with four, the Atlanta Braves with two, and the Arizona Diamondbacks with one. The Padres’ bullpen, anchored by Mason Miller, and the midseason acquisitions of Casey Mize and Robbie Ray have made them a dangerous wild‑card.

AL scout: “For me, San Diego is the perfect sleeper team. They’re better now than they have been all season, but because they’ve been fighting for a playoff spot and have no chance at the division, it doesn’t feel like people are talking about them. Their last‑second grab of Mize and Ray might be [general manager AJ] Preller’s best work if they go far. And it just seems like everyone who was slumping in the first half is hot now.”

NL executive: “Jackson Merrill is going good. So is that bullpen. They’re my sleeper pick.”

The Cubs, with their blend of offense and a veteran starting staff, also have the potential to surprise if their bullpen stabilizes.

AL Sleeper Teams

The American League sleeper poll was less definitive, but the Houston Astros received the most votes (7), followed by the Chicago White Sox (3) and Toronto Blue Jays (1). The Astros’ pedigree and the presence of Yordan Alvarez and Josh Hader give them a chance, though their pitching depth is questioned.

AL executive: “I can’t pick the White Sox anymore. I would have a month ago. So Houston is about the only choice left for a sleeper. It’s not an easy case to make, but Yordan Alvarez can change a series by himself, while Josh Hader is as good as ever right now. I just don’t know about the rest of their pitching, but Hunter Brown and Peter Lambert could carry the day. Hayden Wesneski has been excellent.”

NL scout: “The Astros are not great, but they have pedigree. I think Hayden Wesneski could be a guy for them in October. His sweeper is really good right now. They have some home run power outside of Alvarez, which could surprise teams in October.”

AL scout: “If the White Sox can get just a little starting pitching, they could still make some noise. They have a bullpen. That’s always a need in the playoffs. And they can hit home runs. They just haven’t lately. I like them as a sleeper, assuming [Davis] Martin or [Sean] Burke are good.”

Key Takeaways

The poll underscores the importance of pitching in October. The Brewers and Yankees are the clear favorites, but the Padres and Astros have the potential to disrupt the bracket. The outcome will likely hinge on bullpen performance and the health of key stars.
