Stock futures fall as investors weigh AI safety concerns, oil gains: Live updates

Stock Futures Slide on AI IPO Uncertainty and Oil Surge Amid Global Market Jitters

Stock futures dropped early Monday as investors weighed a rapidly shifting landscape for artificial intelligence public listings and a sharp rally in crude oil prices following a major Saudi pipeline closure. The dual pressures underscored growing caution in markets that had been lifted earlier in the year by the AI boom and aggressive infrastructure spending.

AI IPO Pipeline Stalls as Safety Concerns Intensify

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a weekend interview that the ChatGPT-maker would not go public this year, calling an IPO “ill-advised” just one month after CFO Sarah Friar had suggested a public listing by 2027 at the latest. The reversal added to uncertainty around the timeline for one of the most anticipated tech debuts in years.

Meanwhile, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay calling for a slower pace of AI development citing safety risks. In a CBS News interview Sunday, Amodei acknowledged the “toughest dilemma”: what happens if rival China does not adopt similar restraint. The comments signal deepening debate within the AI industry over the balance between innovation speed and responsible deployment.

The AI boom has driven the stock market to record levels and sparked massive corporate spending on data centers and compute infrastructure. But the weekend developments suggested that the positive spillover to public markets from AI efficiency gains and a wave of tech IPOs could be less certain than previously assumed.

Oil Prices Jump Above $100 on Saudi Pipeline Shutdown

Crude rallied more than 2% Sunday night after Saudi Arabia shut a key pipeline bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. U.S. crude had already broken above $100 per barrel the previous week for the first time since May, fueled by escalating Middle East tensions.

The oil surge dragged on equities the prior week, with the Dow sliding 1.6% for its biggest weekly loss since March. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite fell roughly 0.8% and 0.7% respectively, reflecting investor unease over energy costs and geopolitical risk.

Asian Markets Mixed Ahead of Fed Decision

In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed 0.81% lower, while South Korea’s Kospi fell 3.26%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 edged 0.10% higher, and mainland China’s CSI 300 slipped 0.67% to 4,480.08. The mixed session reflected regional sensitivity to both oil prices and the upcoming Federal Reserve policy meeting.

The Fed gathers this week, with Fed funds futures traders pricing in a roughly 86% likelihood of a rate hike according to CME’s FedWatch tool. Julia Hermann, global market strategist at New York Life Investment Management, noted: “The investor playbook from here depends on whether Fed hikes or long rates are the dominant driver of today’s tighter rates environment.”

No major earnings reports or economic releases are expected Monday, leaving geopolitical and AI-sector news as the primary catalysts.

Outlook

Investors face a convergence of risks: AI IPO uncertainty clouding the tech outlook, oil supply disruption feeding inflation worries, and a Fed decision that could reshape rate expectations. The market’s direction this week will likely hinge on whether the AI safety debate cools or intensifies, and whether Middle East tensions ease enough to pull energy prices back from $100.
