Mike Vrabel arrives at Patriots press conference with puppy on arm, dodging question from Dianna Russini

Mike Vrabel held his first press conference at New England Patriots training camp this week, which — most importantly, of course — marked his first real-time appearance in front of reporters since an offseason with Dianna Russini.

Naturally, Vrabel came with interest and a full answer… but not what you expected.

To be honest, none of us expected this development, but I admit that it was a solid plan.

The second-year coach came to the press conference with a dog in his arms. That’s right. DOG. Tiny dog. It was all part of the Patriots’ Patriots program, which is now in its second year. Essentially, the team opens the first day of training camp by holding a dog adoption event.

Naturally, this worked in Vrabel’s favor after one of the worst offseasons for a head coach that I can remember.

Take a look at THIS:

“Welcome everyone, great to see you guys,” Vrabel said with a grin as he opened the 2026 season. “If anyone is looking to add to their home roster, we would love for you to be able to adopt these dogs.”

Amazing. What a move by Vrabel and the Patriots. This is called zigzag, while others do zigzag and they succeeded.

Oh, you want to bombard me with questions about my off-season cheating? Great! You do this while I hold the abandoned puppy. Fire, media!

Of course it worked! Actually, like an amulet. Vrabel hasn’t answered any questions about Dianna Russini, as OutKick’s Armando Salguero noted Friday:

It was all football, which Vrabel handled as deftly as Ted Williams did with his fastball.

Vrabel was asked about the status of second-round draft pick Gabe Jacas, who remains unsigned. The reporters did focus six of their roughly 20 questions to Vrabel on the topic of Khakass.

How are contract negotiations going?

How is his health?

Football stuff.

That’s all. That’s all we got from Vrabel on day one of an offseason that included an NFL insider cheating scandal that was so bad she was fired.

It was so bad that Vrabel was sent to rehab during the NFL Draft.

It was So Too bad it caused Russini’s own employer, the New York Times, to write a scathing article about her after the fact.

But during his first Friday press conference in MONTHS, Vrabel became confused with the dog in the same way players and coaches do with their children after a tough loss.

I didn’t expect this chess move, but unfortunately I have to respect it.

Welcome back, NFL. We miss such pettiness.
