2025 – Ailing chipmaker Intel cancels plans to build its giant factories in Magdeburg, employing up to 3,000 people. This means the region is short of a reported investment of €30 billion, of which nearly €10 billion comes from tax revenue subsidies.
2001 – New rules apply to shopping in Germany. The Rebate Act of 1933 is officially set to expire. This means that restrictions on discounts and promotional gifts have been lifted without replacement. The client has the right to freely negotiate prices. The retailer can tempt him with higher discounts and gifts.
1996 – The Higher Regional Court of Hamburg sentences the publishing house Burda to pay 180,000 marks to Princess Caroline of Monaco for false reporting in magazines. This is by far the highest compensation in the history of German press legislation.
1966 – On the Frankfurt-Cologne motorway near Limburg an der Lahn in Hesse, a Belgian bus crashes through a bridge railing and falls onto a country road. 30 children and three adults died.
1961 – Federal Minister of Transport Hans-Christoph Seebohm opens the Rendsburg Canal tunnel. The 1,280-metre crossing under the Kiel Canal replaces the previous swing bridge, a notorious bottleneck for north-south traffic.
