Science fiction fans have been eagerly awaiting the theatrical release of Gareth Edwards’ new film in 2023. After all, the director presented very different, but at the same time compelling sci-fi stories: “Monsters,” “Godzilla” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Stories”. This makes Creator the best pure sci-fi film of 2023. Only genre comic adaptations “The Flash” and “Guardians of the Galaxy 3” and sci-fi horror “No One Can Save You” also received a 4.5-star rating this year. What makes The Creator impressive beyond its strong story: Gareth Edwards managed to create breathtaking and beautiful images without spending a mega budget. Or like it in our criticism: Edwards made the film “essentially to make a living.”
“Creator”: Humanity in the war against AI
This is what “The Creator” is about: Artificial intelligence will become a normal part of life in the future – until a nuclear incident occurs in Los Angeles. Since then, the Western world has been waging a fierce war against AI, building a giant space station called NOMAD, which will be able to launch missile attacks on enemies anywhere in the world.
But artificial intelligence and its supporters are not idle either: there are rumors that the mysterious AI architect NIRMATA has created a weapon that could end the war, but also destroy all of humanity. Former agent Joshua (John David Washington) is tasked with the investigation, but he also carries with him a very personal trauma: his wife Maya (Gemma Chan) has gone missing after an undercover operation. When Joshua finds out what this weapon is, he can hardly believe his eyes…
Impressive images, powerful story
This is what makes “Creator” so good: Here, dark, emotional sci-fi meets optical visual power that doesn’t just come from the computer. Gareth Edwards has also filmed in many exotic locations around the world. And that’s without spending a mega-budget: US$80 million used sounds like a lot, but compared to, say, Dune’s $165 million or even Avatar 2: The Way of Water’s $250 million, it’s actually a modest budget – but still Edwards and his team strong images both on location and from the computer conjured.
And the content of the sci-fi spectacle is convincing. Edwards himself has described Creator as Apocalypse Now meets Blade Runner – but despite having great role models, the director, who also wrote the screenplay, has managed to create something entirely his own here. In a film industry where big blockbusters are now mostly a seemingly endless series of franchises, brought “The Creator” brings a breath of fresh air to cinema with its original idea.
