Severe weather, including thunderstorms, damaging winds and heavy rain, is expected Sunday from southern Virginia to northern Georgia following flash flooding in recent days that has killed at least eight people in the United States.
The cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina, are in the path of storms forecast for Sunday afternoon, while central and eastern North Carolina braced for possible flooding.
Severe thunderstorms, including damaging winds and large hail, are also likely across parts of the Dakotas and western Minnesota Sunday afternoon and evening.

Parts of the southwest are also expected to see widespread thunderstorms and heavy downpours on Sunday afternoon as monsoon moisture persists across the region. Flash flooding is possible in parts of the Southwest, where rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible.
More than 1,000 flights were canceled Sunday as airlines worked to restore operations after Saturday’s thunderstorms impacted travel in the Northeast. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also warned of possible flight delays Sunday night due to thunderstorms in the Southeast.

The severe weather comes after heavy rain hit the northeast on Saturday. Heavy rain turned some New York City streets into rivers as floodwaters left drivers stranded on busy highways.

In Woodside, Queens, firefighters drove through floodwaters to rescue stranded drivers on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and in Flushing, Queens, homeowners reported extensive flood damage.
Heat Advisory from the Dakotas to the Gulf Coast
Meanwhile, a heat advisory for Sunday covers an area from the Dakotas to the Gulf Coast, where temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-90s and above. Combined with the humidity, temperatures will reach 105 degrees in parts of the Dakotas and Gulf Coast.
Parts of southeastern Kansas are also under an extreme heat watch until at least Tuesday, when temperatures are expected to reach 110 degrees.
Fire captain and four family members killed in flood
Sunday’s severe weather followed several days of heavy rain and flooding in the Texas Hill Country and other parts of the Southwest that have killed at least eight people since Thursday.
In Utah, a fire captain, his wife and their three sons were killed when they were swept away by floodwaters Friday afternoon during a family camping trip at Sanglow Campground in the Fishlake National Forest near Bicknell, Salt Lake City ABC station KTVX reported.
Capt. Spencer Long of the Provo Fire Department, his wife and two sons died when they were caught in floodwaters July 17, 2026, at the Sanglow Campground near Bicknell, Utah, authorities said.

Capt. Spencer Long, a veteran of the Provo Fire and Rescue Department, died in a campground flood along with members of his family. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office also reported deaths but has not publicly named the victims.

In Arizona, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said the body of a 29-year-old developmentally disabled man, swept into the St. Croix River in Tucson by floodwaters, was found Saturday. Ernesto Ojeda went missing Friday afternoon after witnesses reported he was pulled into the river during flooding, the sheriff’s department said.
In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott announced that two people had died as a result of flooding that hit Uvalde and Kerr counties in the Texas Hill Country.
