More MBBS seats for Telangana, but infrastructure gaps remain

HYDERABAD: Even as Telangana saw a significant increase in the number of MBBS seats for the academic year 2026-27 following the approval of the National Medical Commission (NMC), doctors and medical education experts have expressed concerns over inadequate infrastructure, shortage of faculty, limited clinical experience, insufficient number of postgraduate seats and lack of employment opportunities for the growing number of medical graduates.

The NMC has approved an increase in the number of MBBS seats in Telangana by 810 seats for the academic year 2026-27, taking the total number of seats in the state to 10,250.

Dr Karthik Nagula, President, Health Reform Doctors Association (HRDA), said, “Some of the newly established colleges are running with minimal facilities. Some places do not have proper campus, hostel, canteen, library or other necessary infrastructure for students. Students are accommodated outside the campuses in private institutions. Increasing the number of seats without developing necessary infrastructure will ultimately affect the quality of medical education.”

Overall, the number of MBBS seats in Telangana has increased by about 8 percent in the last one year. Government medical colleges recorded a growth of 13 percent while private colleges recorded a growth of 3 percent. Experts said the higher growth in government institutions is encouraging as it will provide more opportunities to students from economically weaker sections.
