Paramount Pictures has signed an agreement to acquire the US rights to the original script for A Nightmare on Elm Street, a film written and directed by the late Wes Craven.

The studio is licensing the rights to Craven’s estate, which includes his widow Iya Labunka and his son Jonathan Craven. They will produce the new version along with Mark Toberoff.

“We look forward to introducing a new and fully engaged generation of fans to the world of Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Labunca said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “We know Wes would be thrilled to see horror take its long-overdue place in the cultural canon. We can’t wait for all of us to sit together in a dark theater – around tonight’s bonfire – as the next chapter of Nightmare’s story unfolds.”

The original A Nightmare on Elm Street premiered in 1984 and instantly turned terrifying killer Freddy Krueger into a horror icon who attacks people in their sleep. The film stars Robert Englund as Krueger, Heather Langenkamp as Nancy, and a young Johnny Depp in his film debut.

A Nightmare on Elm Street launched a franchise that included seven sequels and a 2010 reboot, as well as a television series, as well as mountains of Krueger merchandise and pop culture appearances.

The new film will be part of Paramount Primal, a label within the larger studio headed by J.D. Lifshitz and Rafael Margules, producers of the horror hits “Barbarian” and “Friendship.”
