World Cup 2026: England discuss Tuchel’s tactics against Argentina

In fresh comments to British newspapers, Tuchel was asked at length about tactics and approach.

“I haven’t seen the data yet, but I think immediately after a goal the momentum in possession changes completely, the chances drop dramatically,” he said.

“We have become too passive in our structure. I tried to help: not become more passive with the back five, but be more active, get to the wingers quicker, and not open up gaps between the back four.”

“We encouraged everyone to come out of the structure and be more active in the structure, but we had to fight.

“We couldn’t find any more duels, so we fell deeper and deeper, which was never the plan, but it happened.

“We needed to win the ball again otherwise you can’t release the pressure and you can’t get the momentum back.”

Tuchel said possession of the ball “plays a decisive role.”

“It may not be in our DNA like it is in Spain, Argentina or Brazil, to take the ball, control the game and control the ball, which is also a big problem,” he said.

“I still think we can show how good footballers we are. I think it’s still in us and I see it in training and every training camp.”

Tuchel was appointed with the belief that he could finally get England over the line.

Gareth Southgate reached one World Cup semi-final and two European Championship finals during his reign, but Tuchel’s tactical acumen was seen as what was needed to transform England from barely men into winners.

But the view among some players that Tuchel made a mistake in Atlanta will create an intriguing dynamic between player and coach ahead of the European Championship qualifying campaign.

While Tuchel still has the full support of Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham, the criticism the German faced after the defeat to Argentina did not go unnoticed.

As always, the FA will review England’s performance at the tournament once they return home from Saturday’s bronze medal match against France.

While England’s progress to the semi-finals is still viewed as an achievement by the FA, it is clear they still have a lot to unpack regarding the circumstances of their defeat to Argentina.
