Prime Minister Mark Carney said the federal government will spend “nearly $2 billion” over the next four years on Canadian-made armored vehicles.
According to him, the planned addition of 190 armored combat vehicles will bring the total fleet of the armed forces to 550 vehicles.
Carney announced the deal Thursday in London, Ont., at the Canadian campus of global defense contractor General Dynamics Land Systems.
The Prime Minister said each vehicle will be manufactured at the company’s Ontario plant using parts from suppliers across the country.

“All of these parts – each carefully crafted and manufactured by Canadians from British Columbia to Nova Scotia – are brought here to the London plant where (General Dynamics) workers turn them into modern armored fighting vehicles,” Carney said.
The Prime Minister said the purchase is an example of his government’s defense industrial strategy, which aims to strengthen Canada’s national security capabilities by using domestic suppliers whenever possible.

Carney said the strategic partnership with General Dynamics will “create and support” 6,000 jobs over the next eight years.
In 2019, Ottawa purchased 360 armored vehicles from General Dynamics, deliveries of which should be completed by the end of 2025.
Canada’s armored fleet is deployed in a variety of missions overseas, and Carney announced last week that 35 vehicles would be built to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
