Bangladesh riots over demands for education minister to resign

Bangladesh is in turmoil over several demands, including the resignation of the education minister. Students hit the road again in memory of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. They surrounded the Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education in Dhaka on Tuesday. Not only this, students also protested by blocking the road at the Science Laboratory Junction in Dhaka. Apart from Dhaka, this movement spread to different parts of the country including Barisal, Comilla.

The agitators alleged that wrong and difficult questions were asked in the recent physics exams. They claim that the government has not canceled the HSC examination despite flooding and rainfall in different parts of the country. As a result, many students were not even able to pass the exam. So they hit the ground running, focusing on several education-related demands, including the resignation of the education minister. The gathering began outside the Dhaka Education Board on Tuesday afternoon. They began to raise slogans demanding the resignation of the Minister of Education. The procession was stopped by the police as it headed towards the Education Department. Then the tension increases. Protesters clashed with police. Angry students began throwing bricks at the board of education. According to a student named Maruf Hassan: “This education minister thinks of us as chickens. Has he forgotten that he only became Education Minister because these chickens bled in 2024? Our only demand is his resignation.” It is known that traffic on 32 routes, including Dhaka, Barisal, was disrupted due to this blockade. Many passengers were injured. Sources also said police used little force to disperse protesters.

It is worth noting that students took to the road even on Monday due to incessant rain. Shortly before four o’clock in the afternoon, students blocked the capital’s intersection with a scientific laboratory. Earlier, around 3:30 pm, agitators staged a protest in front of the Dhaka Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Department at Bakshibabazar. He also raised slogans demanding the resignation of the education minister. However, the protests intensified on Tuesday.
