According to TFRD, the incident began when a mother and her children stopped on the side of the road due to a flat tire. The children’s father later arrived on the scene and found the mother and four children unconscious.

First responders, including the Toledo Fire Department hazmat team, immediately began providing emergency medical services and secured the area.

All five were taken to the hospital, where three died. Two children are now in critical condition.

The identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed.

While the exact details of the incident remain under active investigation, Toledo Fire Chief Allison Armstrong confirmed there is no ongoing danger to the public.

“We believe the problem is isolated,” Armstrong said.

Police are asking drivers to avoid the area while the investigation continues.

Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz responded to the death in a Facebook post, calling the death “accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.”

“Our hearts are with this family who have suffered an unimaginable loss, and we are praying for the recovery of the two children who continue to fight for their lives,” Kapszukiewicz said. “We also extend our gratitude to the first responders, medical personnel and law enforcement officers who responded quickly and did the best they could under incredibly difficult circumstances.”
