Spain showed an absolute masterclass in control to secure their place in their second World Cup final, leaving the rest of the world stunned by how France was overwhelmed.

Les Bleus entered Tuesday’s highly anticipated semi-final as overwhelming favorites for the tournament, with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise making them an attacking force to be feared.

But while many wondered how they could beat France, Spain reminded everyone why they are European champions and are unbeaten in a record 37 matches, running out 2-0 winners.

Luis de la Fuente’s men have flown under the radar at this World Cup – even failing to beat debutants Cape Verde in their opening match – with teenage superstar Lamin Yamal scoring just one goal.

But they appear to have peaked at the right time and, having kept six clean sheets out of seven games, can look forward to being favorites for Sunday’s World Cup final, where they will face either Argentina or England.

France, meanwhile, must prepare for the third-place play-off after being disappointed by a midfield masterclass and managing just three shots on target.

“Spain scalped France – they leveled France,” said former Premier League champion Chris Sutton, who attended the game live on BBC Radio 5.

“We gave France so much praise in this tournament but they were brushed aside by silky Spain. Basically Spain won and outplayed this French team.”

Roy Keane, another Premier League winner, said on ITV: “France didn’t play as a team. Brilliant individuals did not play as a team.”

“Spain has performed brilliantly and is a real pleasure to watch.”

When De la Fuente was appointed head coach of Spain in December 2022, some called him “Luis de la Who?”

Spain – world champions under Vicente del Bosque in 2010 – are accustomed to being led by senior figures and de la Fuente was seen as a low-key appointment at the federation after managing the country’s under-19, under-21 and under-23 teams.

But the 65-year-old gave a decisive answer to doubters.

Having led Spain to Nations League triumph in 2023 and Euro 2024 glory, he has now led them to the World Cup final.

If England win in Atlanta on Wednesday, they will repeat the European Championship final two years ago.
