Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has announced her return to Bangladesh. Bangladesh welcomed his move. However, advice was also given to Sheikh Hasina. Zahid Ur Rahman, an adviser to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tariq Rahman, said he should bring along the best lawyer in the world. He said Hasina, who has been sentenced to death, should face trial. Hasina (78), daughter of Bangladesh’s founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, resigned as prime minister on August 5, 2024, following violent protests led by students. After that, she left the country and went to India. Since then she has lived in India.

The death penalty will be carried out

Advisor to Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Information and Strategy Zahid Ur Rahman said at a press conference that we welcome Hasina’s statement as we want to ensure justice. He said the people of the country want the death sentence given to Hasina for her crimes to be upheld. Given this, his death sentence will be carried out because the people want it.

Rehman said let Hasina attract the best lawyers in the world. He said the proceedings at the International Criminal Tribunal-Bangladesh (ICT-BD) will be conducted transparently, can be monitored by observers and can also be broadcast.

what is the probability of acquittal

Rehman said it was also possible that the court could review Hasina’s sentence or acquit her. He said the government was not under any pressure over Hasina’s proposed return. There have been several cases in the past where decisions of the ICT-BD, which was established during the Awami League regime in 2010, were suspended or cancelled. Rehman said procedural issues will not prevent Hasina’s return and India can talk to Bangladesh and take necessary action on the issue.

Who punished Hasina?

Last November, a special tribunal in Dhaka sentenced Hasina to death in absentia, deeming the then Hasina government’s crackdown on the student movement in 2024 a crime against humanity. Hasina has denied her death sentence, criminal conviction and all charges, calling them politically motivated. Since the verdict, Bangladesh has continuously demanded that India extradite Hasina to Dhaka so she can face trial.
