The end of the match and the intense fireworks display in the center of Lyon this Tuesday, July 14th. After the traditional fire from Fourviere and the Blues’ defeat to Spain in the World Cup semi-finals, both tournaments ended almost simultaneously, tensions flared in the city.

While the crowd left the embankments of the Saône sector to reach Bellecourt, in particular the metro, tensions arose in this sector between young people and the police, noted Lyon news on the spot.

Mortar fire on the police, tear gas…

After the match, mobile groups of young people launched fireworks into the air, and some also aimed at the police stationed throughout the square. According to the Rhône prefecture, mortar fire also hit departmental operational units and Republican security forces, including CRS 83.

Police had to use tear gas several times to disperse people from Place Bellecour, Rue de la République and Rue de la Barre. In response to the mortar attack, tear gas was also fired at the metro station, which was closed throughout the evening.

Garbage cans were also set on fire. Four people were arrested for throwing shells and mortars, according to a post-midnight report. One of the suspects was carrying “incendiary devices,” a security source said.

“Operations continue, risk groups are systematically dispersed and those responsible for violence are arrested,” the prefecture tweeted at 1 a.m.

Gunshot wound in La Guillotiere

In addition to the violence in Presqu’ile, a man was shot and injured around 11 p.m. when the France-Spain match ended. The events took place in the Guillotiere area (7th arrondissement).

Two people fled on a scooter; the health of the victim and the motive for the attack are unknown.
