Manchester United have confirmed the free transfer of veteran goalkeeper Karl Darlow following the expiration of his contract at Leeds United.

“This is a really special opportunity; “Everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I can’t wait to play my part in supporting my teammates and helping take the group forward.”
Darlow’s arrival is just part of a bigger picture at Old Trafford this summer, with newly appointed permanent manager Michael Carrick overseeing the latest chapter in a squad overhaul.

Taken in isolation, United’s move for Darlow may seem surprising. He was in and out of Leeds’ squad last season, keeping five clean sheets in 22 appearances to help the Yorkshire side avoid relegation from the Premier League.
However, it is important to note that United did not sign Darlow as a new starter, but rather as a back-up to current starter Senne Lammens, who has kept Carrick’s faith despite a serious error in the World Cup quarter-final against Belgium.
“Carl has proven his ability to perform at the highest level and his work ethic and driven nature make him a truly strong addition to our team,” said Director of Football Jason Wilcox.
“We are delighted to add a player of his caliber and experience to our excellent group of goalkeepers.”

Darlow becomes the fourth senior goalkeeper in Carrick’s squad alongside Andre Onana after he returned to Trabzonspor on loan. Clearly one player must leave and it will almost certainly be Turkey international Altay Bayindir.
There was some surprise in 2023 when Bayndir gave up his starting role at Fenerbahce and took up a reserve role at United. He is only 28 years old but has played just 17 times in three seasons and it is now believed that a lack of minutes has led to all parties agreeing a move is needed.
With Darlow now joining fellow veteran Tom Heaton in a deep goalkeeping group, Bayndir is free to follow Onana out of goal and complete a complete reset of the position since Erik ten Hag was on the bench.
An expected return to Turkey is Bayndir, who was highly rated during his time at Fenerbahçe and hopes to restart a career that has undoubtedly stalled since his risky move to Old Trafford three years ago.
