Tom Holland, meet Tom Holland: stars of "Odyssey", "Holiday is History"

The Tom Hollands got together to confuse search engines with talk about Christopher Nolan. Odyssey – and broke the Internet.

British actor Tom Holland, who played Telemachus in the film, joined his fellow countryman, historian and The rest is history co-host Tom Holland to discuss the adaptation’s extraordinary scale, working in Imax, and balancing the film’s historical reality with ancient myth.

Rest is history sit-in, which prompted many Spider-Man The meme reaction surrounding the actor’s upcoming appearance in the MCU also comes as the historian finds himself at the center of an unlikely culture war clash with Elon Musk over a Nolan film. Musk has started something of a campaign against Odysseywhich has irked a herd of critics on social media, who call the film’s diverse cast, such as Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, too “woke,” despite widespread recognition that Homer’s work is, of course, fiction.

The podcast host was invited to the blockbuster’s star-studded London premiere and later took aim at the naysayers: “More praise for Odyssey from people who, shockingly, actually waited to see it before giving their opinion.” Musk responded, as he often does on the platform: “Tom Holland is such an asshole.” But the historian simply doubled down on his position. “Very happy to say it again,” he wrote on X.Odyssey it’s an amazing movie and you can’t watch it because you think he’s woken up or something else is cutting off your nose to spite your face. Your loss.”

Nolan himself brushed off the criticism, saying Telegraph in a recent interview: “It comes with the territory… These conversations that happen before people see the movie – they’re always irrelevant because no one who has them yet knows what the movie actually is.”

One of the film’s lead actors spoke to his namesake in a recorded conversation for The rest is history that he believes his and Anne Hathaway’s roles, such as Telemachus and his mother Penelope, represent “the reality of the story.”

“The Odysseus side of the story, the Matt side of the story, is a myth,” said Holland, who co-stars with his co-star Zendaya. “And they played this huge game of telephone with these lyrics. You know, it hadn’t been written down for hundreds of years. There was a dark period in ancient Greece where no one wrote anything down, so they sang a song. What I love about the creative choices that Chris made in this part of the story is that he kind of pushed the boundaries of what could be considered historically accurate or real, because it’s a myth.”

They also touched on the experience of filming in Imax, to which Holland (an actor again) told the author, broadcaster and translator: “Imax is a whole different beast. I would say there’s a huge difference between acting on stage and acting on screen. And then there’s an even bigger difference between acting on screen and acting in Imax. Because in Imax you just can’t hide anything,” he explained, saying the resolution is very good and “there are no secrets.”

“There’s nowhere to hide. It really makes for a more refined version of the performance because it can get too big very quickly. So I really enjoyed trying to find that sweet spot where you’re perfect with the camera.”
