Heat warning issued for Toronto and GTA starting Monday

Environment Canada has issued a yellow heat warning for Toronto and surrounding areas starting Monday.

Temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 30 to 36 C and humidity values of 38 to 45 C, the national weather agency predicts. The hot and humid forecast is expected to last until Wednesday or Thursday evening.

“Tuesday will mark the peak of this heat wave, with maximum temperatures expected to reach around 36 degrees Celsius in some areas,” Environment Canada said in a notice. “Hot and humid air can also deteriorate air quality and cause the Air Quality Index to move closer to the high risk category.”

“Take steps to protect yourself and others – extreme heat can affect everyone’s health,” it added.

Heat warnings have been issued for Toronto, Pickering, Oshawa, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Peel, Halton, Hamilton and Niagara.

“Monitor yourself and others for early signs of heat exhaustion,” officials added. “Signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and extreme fatigue. Stop your activities and drink water.”
