Half results:
Argentina leads Switzerland 1-0 at half-time in the last quarter-final of the World Cup. The Copa America winners took their first chance to score early in the game, but after that they didn’t feel the need to make much of a contribution to the game. From the tenth minute of the game there was not a single shot on goal. So the Swiss had to take responsibility for the game design. From the very beginning, the team showed that they are not afraid of this. However, until now there were not enough resources to realize at least something in possession of the ball. There was simply no way for the rather unimaginative Swiss to pass.

Yellow card Brelu Embolo (Switzerland)
In the mid lane, Bril Embolo is too late against Leandro Paredes and clumsily overtakes his opponent. The ball is long gone. This action results in the first yellow card of the game.
43.
03:45
On the left, near the penalty area, the ball is ready for Switzerland to take a free kick. Fabian Rieder is ready again, but this time Remo Freuler strikes with his right foot. His cross or throw attempt is set too high.
41.
03:43
Argentina is now just waiting for transitional moments, now launching such an attack, but cannot complete it.
38.
03:41
And so Murat Yakin’s people clenched their teeth. There is simply no way to get through, there are simply no ideas.
36.
03:37
Fabian Rieder now takes the free kick on the left flank. This flank is already better. But Emiliano Martinez shows good control of the penalty area and intervenes with his fists.
35.
03:36
This is exactly how the Swiss design their first turn. On the left, Fabian Rieder takes care of this. His high cross hit the Argentine’s head.
34.
03:35
At this stage, the team again increases possession of the ball and remains in the opponent’s half of the field for a long time.
32.
03:34
Then there will be a place for the Swiss. Bril Embolo makes his way into the penalty area, causing problems for Lisandro Martinez. Emiliano Martinez rushes at him in the penalty area. The Swiss striker cannot get past the goalkeeper.
31.
03:32
Now Enzo Fernandez is losing the fight near his own box. But a few seconds later Lisandro Martinez corrected the mistake.
29.
03:31
Enzo Fernandez falls to his knees and appears injured. There is no treatment yet. Let’s see how events develop with the Chelsea midfielder’s condition.
26.
03:27
Gaming operations will now resume with the updated players.
25.
03:26
The Argentines have now practically leveled the score in terms of ball possession. Shots on goal are also at the same height – three each. At the beginning of the game, it became clear that the South Americans were somewhat stronger in duels. In general, leadership is certainly not undeserved.
23.
03:24
Shortly after this, the referee calls a drinking break, which also gives both coaches the opportunity to make some adjustments.
20.
03:22
Now the ball passes from the Swiss side and hits the goal. However, Emiliano Martinez made a very successful catch from Djibril Sow’s long-range shot.
18.
03:21
Argentina is now finding a better balance. Despite the advantage, the current champion wants to play and is catching up in the share of games.
16.
03:20
The Argentines then win the ball. Lionel Messi rises up the right flank and then moves into the centre. But Manuel Akanji smells the fry, follows the movements well, invests his body and solves the problem with determination.
14.
03:18
At least the Swiss are not impressed, they continue to work hard but still have not made significant progress.
12.
03:17
The South Americans took their first chance to score. This efficiency makes all of Switzerland’s efforts to reduce their advantage in possession a pointless art.

Great for Argentina, 1-0 from Alexis Mac Allister
The first corner gives nothing, but the second one is from the other, left side. Lionel Messi goes there to work, kicks the ball high. At the front of the goal area, Alexis Mac Allister twists and thrusts her head completely unsteadily into the far corner. The midfielder scores his second goal at the World Cup – his first in this tournament.

03:11
Then the Argentines show determination for the first time and attack from the right. On her second try, Alexis Mac Allister gets her first shot on goal from Lionel Messi’s pass. The ball is deflected, resulting in a corner.
7.
03:09
Soon after, Granit Xhaka tries his hand from the second row. But the captain also doesn’t quite hit the ball cleanly, which flies far over Emiliano Martinez’s goal.
6.
03:08
The Europeans penetrate into the penalty area from the left. Fabian Rieder works there. With luck, his ball will hit Djibril Sow in the middle. His shot attempt from the half-right position failed.
5.
03:06
Speed doesn’t even matter yet. The Swiss very carefully move into the opponent’s half of the field and press there. But there is no further progress until or even until the sixteenth.
3.
03:05
Already at the initial stage, Switzerland tried to shape the game, facing the aggressive Argentines, who then also showed an interest in possession.

03:01
Portuguese referee Joao Pinheiro just published the game. Switzerland is starting.

Start of the game
02:55
These two senior national teams will face each other for the eighth time. Switzerland has never managed to win. At least in friendly matches in 1990 and 2007, they drew 1:1 twice. All other fights went to the Argentines. These included two World Cup meetings – a group game in 1966 (2:0) and in 2014, the last meeting to date, a 1/8 final match (1:0 after extra time).
02:45
The Swiss haven’t lost in eight matches. The last defeat occurred at the end of March in a friendly match in Germany (3:4). The last time they lost an official game was in November 2024 in the Nations League A in Spain (2:3). Since then, the Swiss have not lost a single match. The last time Argentina fell behind was in September 2025. When first place in World Cup qualifying was already secured, they lost to Ecuador with a score of 0:1. This was followed by complete victories – twelve in total.
02:35
The record South American champions have already reached the World Cup semi-finals five times. The Argentines even played in the finals on six occasions. When they first won the title in 1978, there were two group stages and no semi-finals. Other triumphs were celebrated in 1986 and 2022. The last four round will be new territory for Switzerland. The quarter-finals were the best results to date that the team had achieved in 1934, 1938, 1954 and 2026.
02:25
This quarter-final pits two unbeaten teams against each other. Switzerland finished first in Group B and, after a poor start against Qatar (1:1), beat Bosnia and Herzegovina (4:1) and Canada (2:1). In the 1/8 finals, the Swiss knocked out Algeria (2-0). A penalty shootout was needed against Colombia to remain in the tournament. Argentina have won all five games so far. The world champion advanced through the group stage, beating Algeria (3:0), Austria (2:0) and Jordan (3:1). In the first knockout game, the South Americans defeated World Cup newcomers Cape Verde 3-2 in extra time. In the quarter-finals against Egypt, a 0-2 score later turned into a 3-2 score.
02:15
After beating Egypt 3-2 in the round of 16 on Tuesday, Lionel Scaloni sees no reason to change anything about Argentina’s starting line-up. For Switzerland, Murat Yakin makes changes in the penalty thriller against Colombia. Djibril Sow starts in place of Ardon Jashari (bench). Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi remains very much missing with a knee bruise.
Hello and welcome to the final quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup! Two teams will meet Argentina and Switzerland, each of which ended up in the top 8 in equal matches.
