Actor Danny McBride reveals the real reason he decided to leave Los Angeles.
On a new episode of Rich’s podcast, Roll Roll asked him about his decision to move his family from the Los Angeles bubble to Charleston, South Carolina in 2017.
McBride, who created and starred in shows such as Eastbound and Down and The Righteous Gems, explained that one of the reasons he enjoys living where he lives now is because it gives him more creative freedom.

“When we filmed Eastbound, we were filming in Wilmington, North Carolina, and given that there was no direct flight from Los Angeles to North Carolina at the time, we noticed that executives never came to the set,” McBride said. “We were like, ‘Oh, we just need to pick cities that aren’t easy to get to from L.A. and then we’ll have more freedom.’

McBride also said another benefit of living in Charleston is that his children – he and wife Gia Ruiz share son Declan, 14, and daughter Ava, 10 – are not as involved in social media as they might have been living in Los Angeles.
“In my home, I try to limit my kids’ access to all these things,” he said. “I just try to be present in their lives. So if they listen to someone else’s opinion about the world, then hopefully it’s mine and my wife’s, and not someone else’s on the Internet.”

“I think maybe that’s part of the benefit of being in Charleston: We live on a creek, and the kids in our neighborhood are into fishing, and they, you know, love being in the water,” he shared. “And I don’t know… I don’t think it’s as common there.”
McBride told Roll, an author, athlete and plant-based nutritionist, that his life changed when he had children.
“It was very easy to do this job when I didn’t have kids,” he admitted, explaining that he used to “dedicate all my time to work.”
“And then when I had kids, I started thinking, ‘I don’t want to spend so much time on this. I want to get results, but now I have other work to do. I want to be around these kids. I want to be a good partner for my wife. I don’t want to put all these things on hold just because I’m doing a TV show.”

“I have to find a balance,” McBride said.
What’s good for McBride is that he starts his day before his kids even wake up.

“And then when the kids wake up, I’ve already started something that gets my mind going, that excites me. I can sit down and be present for these kids, take them to school, drop them off, then come home and jam some more,” McBride said. “I’m just trying to find time that works and doesn’t distract me while the rest of my life is going on and I’m knocking back the bullshit and the damn jokes.”
